In 2002, at its 17th world congress, the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) established World Soil Day. Many special events that take place on this day bring attention to the vital importance of soil.

Thus soil makes key contributions to climate action, biodiversity and food supply security.

The upcoming soil of the year is also announced on World Soil Day.
