Restoration measures following Climate Change Conference concluded successfully

The Federal Environment Ministry has handed over the freshly restored Rheinaue park to the City of Bonn in time for the new event season.

State Secretary at the Federal Environment Ministry Jochen Flasbarth commented: "We are delighted to return the Rheinaue to the citizens in time for the "Rhein in Flammen" event . I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts. The area is available for use again, and there are only a few finishing touches necessary over the next few days.

Last November the UN Climate Change Conference (COP 23) took place in Bonn. After the smooth dismantling of all tents and temporary structures, work on restoring the "Blumenwiese" area started a few weeks ago. Over the past weeks, 59,000 square metres of lawn were restored. The fence enclosing the former conference area was kept up to protect the newly laid turf and ensure that roots can quickly knit into the soil.

COP 23 was the first Climate Change Conference officially recognised as environmentally sound with EMAS certification. EMAS stands for eco-management and audit scheme. All goals and measures were documented in the conference's environmental statement, then assessed on-site over several days by environmental verifiers and finally validated.
