Response to Fukushima

On 11 March 2011 Japan was struck by a severe earthquake. The impact of this seismic event and the tsunami it triggered was also felt at nuclear power plant sites - specifically Fukushima I (Daiichi), Fukushima II (Daini), Onagawa and Tokai. At Japan's Fukushima I (Daiichi) nuclear power plant, it was the tsunami in particular that was to cause the worst reactor disaster since Chernobyl. The Federal Ministry for the Environment has since been closely involved in developments within Germany which have arisen in direct consequence.
