The German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) has submitted a report to the BMU, entitled "Towards an ambitious environmental policy in Germany and Europe".

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze received the new environmental report from the German Advisory Council on the Environment (SRU) today. The report, which was presented in a video conference by the SRU chair, Professor Claudia Hornberg, is entitled "Towards an ambitious environmental policy in Germany and Europe".

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze commented: "Over the last few weeks, the coronavirus pandemic has shown that scientific support and advice are vital for our policy. This is why panels of experts like the German Advisory Council on the Environment assist the federal government. We would be well advised to use scientific expertise as best we can, not only in questions of human health but also in all key policy areas. The SRU environmental report provides good arguments that support the Green Recovery. Now it is time to take joint, decisive action to make our economy and society more resilient to crisis, fairer and more environmentally sound."

The 2020 environmental report is the last publication of the council members’ current term of office, which ends on 30 June 2020. Minister Schulze thanked the council members for their work.

Established by the German government in 1971, the SRU is responsible for assessing the environmental situation in Germany and making recommendations for action on current issues of environmental policy. The council submits an environmental report to the Federal Environment Ministry every four years and draws up other special reports, statements and open letters.

The report is available on the SRU website.
