"Get important GHG emitters on board"

Federal Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks has declared international climate policy to be a top priority during her term in office. From the very beginning she has placed particular stress on the direct exchange of opinion with international negotiating partners. State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth will therefore travel to the US, India, China and Russia from 6 to 12 February 2014 for political talks.

State Secretary Flasbarth: "Our major target is to get the most important GHG emitters worldwide on board. The transformation of the energy system in Germany and our ambitious climate policy have attracted a lot of attention in these countries. We want to use our good bilateral cooperation to overcome persistent obstacles in international climate action." The State Secretary will meet government representatives responsible for climate action and environmental protection in Washington D.C, Beijing, New Delhi and Moscow. In New York he will talk with senior representatives of UN and the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

Talks will primarily focus on an exchange of views on international climate action with a view to the planned conclusion of a new international climate agreement at the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in 2015. In addition, there will be discussions on direct cooperation in climate and energy projects and how this can be expanded.
