Local authorities in Alpine region appeal to climate summit

Under the theme "Climate action now!" cities and communities in the Alpine region appeal to the participants of the climate summit in Paris to adopt an ambitious and binding climate agreement. They confirm their own commitment to climate action and dealing with the impacts of climate change. "The appeal of Alpine local authorities gives us momentum for a successful outcome of the negotiations", said Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Environment Ministry today at the presentation of the appeal. Ulrike Scharf, Bavarian State Minister of the Environment and Consumer Protection, and Markus Reiterer, Secretary General of the Alpine Convention, also took part in the presentation.

Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter accepted the appeal of the Alpine communities as representative for the German Presidency of the Alpine Convention at an international conference of municipalities in late October in the Bavarian monastery Benediktbeuern.

The initiative for the appeal was launched by the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA), the community network Alliance in the Alps and the Alpine Town of the Year association. In the appeal they confirm the commitment of the Alpine municipalities and call for the international community to get on the path to achieving the two degree target. According to the signatories, it is necessary to adopt an ambitious and binding climate agreement in Paris to this end.
