Transformation of German industry by 2050

Challenges and opportunities

The national greenhouse gases emissions should, according to the Federal Government's "Energiekonzept", drop by 80 to 95 per cent in 2050 compared to 1990. That requires additional mitigation efforts from all sectors of economy. However, emissions of the industry sector stagnated in the last 15 years. As per this, the industry must strengthen its mitigation efforts considerably. The additional contributions needed for climate protection from the industry will go along with enormous changes. The Institute for Resource Efficiency and Energy Strategies (IREES) shows with this study, commissioned by the BMUB, the variety of aspects of this transformational process, and which challenges and prospects arise thereof for the German industry.
