Memorandum on Product Carbon Footprint

Given the lack of internationally binding and recognised conventions on methods, the Federal Environment Ministry and the German Environment Agency have commissioned the Institute for Applied Ecology Freiburg to develop proposals for a reliable methodology for calculating product carbon footprints. The results were recorded in a Memorandum published at the end of 2009. The Memorandum contains recommended principles that should be taken into account when establishing and communicating the climate balance of products. The Memorandum was also included in the international processes of developing the technical regulation "Greenhouse gases -- Carbon footprint of products -- Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication" (ISO/TS 14067:2013).
