The G7 Group

[Translate to English:]

The Group of Seven (G7) is not an international organisation. It is an informal forum in which heads of state and government of seven industrialised countries can discuss global economic and foreign policy issues in a small group.

The G7 comprises Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, the USA and Canada. In addition, the EU is represented at all summits. Between 1998 and 2014, the Group of Eight (G8) was made up of all the G7 countries plus Russia.

Several G7 meetings are held every year at different levels during which representatives of the member countries coordinate common positions in a variety of policy areas.

The Presidency of the G7 rotates annually among the members, and is currently held by Germany.

Priorities of the German G7 Presidency are:

  • Strong alliances for a sustainable planet
  • Setting the course for economic stability
  • Enhanced preparedness for healthy lives
  • Sustainable investments for a better future
  • Stronger together through joint action

The G7 activities in environmental policy

Climate and environmental topics have long been established items on the G7 agenda. The focus has regularly been on current issues such as climate change, biodiversity, forest conservation, combatting environmental crime and protecting the worldโ€™s seas and oceans, but in particular also on issues which directly impact the economy.

Alongside the annual meetings of the heads of state and government, in recent years the G7 environment ministers have also met to discuss key climate and environmental policy issues.

The German G7 Presidency will address environmental, climate and energy issues in a joint meeting of the responsible ministers on 26 and 27 May 2022.

The 2022 summit of the G7 heads of state and government will take place from 26 to 28 June at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps.
