The International Climate Initiative is issuing a worldwide call for climate action and biodiversity conservation projects.

New call for funding applications for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic

The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) has launched a worldwide call for project outlines on climate action and biodiversity conservation in emerging economies and developing countries. For this purpose, a thematic selection procedure under the International Climate Initiative has begun with the slogan: "Creating Green Societies in Challenging Times".

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze commented: "The social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been particularly severe in emerging economies and developing countries. With this new funding round under the International Climate Initiative, we are supporting these countries in overcoming the crisis. At the same time, we are making clear that climate action, climate change adaptation and biodiversity conservation can contribute to a sustainable economic recovery."

The funds for this funding round, which amount to 240 million euros, are provided under the International Climate Initiative (IKI). A total of 13 funding priorities have been defined under the slogan "Creating Green Societies in Challenging Times". They cover a broad spectrum, including the development of climate-compatible economic policy perspectives, the mobilisation of private sector capital, climate action in maritime transport, combating desertification and the establishment of an educational landscape on the issue of climate action. Depending on the project, the funding may range from five to 30 million euros.

Eligible applicants include NGOs, business enterprises, federal implementing agencies, higher education and research institutes in Germany and abroad, and international and multilateral organisations such as development banks and United Nations institutions. Please submit your project outline in English via the IKI online platform by 10 March 2021 (23:59, CEST).
