Environmental cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe
Germany's cooperation projects are not only with EU accession countries and the current accession candidates Croatia, Macedonia and Turkey; they extend to other Western Balkan countries, the Caucasus and the countries of Central Asia. The main concern is to resolve the fundamental problems there in the field of air and water quality control and waste management. Since 2008, the Federal Environment Ministry has also supported climate protection projects in developing, newly industrialized and transition countries projects within the framework of its International Climate Protection Initiative. It has supported a range of projects to reduce emissions and others to adapt to the consequences of climate change. Another key area is cooperation withRussia and Ukraine.
