New green economic miracle?
Federal Research Minister Annette Schavan and Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier plan to launch a joint initiative to speed up the shift to a sustainable green economy. Speeding up offshore grid expansion
On August 29 the Federal government adopted the draft for the Third Act Revising the Legislation Governing the Energy Sector. The new legislation aims to speed up the expansion of offshore wind farms. The major focus is on a system change towards a consistent and efficient offshore grid expansion by introducing a binding offshore grid development plan. more

Head of IRENA Amin visits Germany
On August 27 IRENA's Director-General Adnan Amin arrived in Berlin for a two-day official visit at the invitation of the German government. In meetings with Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier and Federal Development Minister Dirk Niebel, Amin commended Germany on its role as an important leader and partner in the international expansion of renewable energies. more

2.5bn euros for the environment
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the European Union's LIFE programme political representatives and nature conservation experts met in Iphofen from 19 to 21 June to discuss future orientations of the EU financing instrument. Since 1992, the EU has provided approx. 2.5bn euros for nature conservation and environmental protection measures. more

Government extends "eco-tax" cap for manufacturing industry
On August 1, the Cabinet adopted the draft law amending the Energy Tax Act. This provides a basis for the continuation of the cap on the "eco-tax" for the manufacturing industries for the next decade. In future, the tax cap will only be granted if the goods-producing companies make a contribution towards energy conservation. more

Advancing global climate protection
At the close of the third Petersberg Climate Dialogue, Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier called for all states to enhance efforts in mitigating climate change in order to keep global warming below the 2 degree upper limit. In July, ministers and delegates from 31 countries met in Berlin to prepare the upcoming UN climate conference in Doha, Qatar. more

Alongside other emission reduction strategies and climate protection measures, emissions trading offers the opportunity to achieve ambitious GHG emission reductions in the most economically efficient manner. An increasing number of countries and regions show an interest in emissions trading. Germany actively supports these efforts in pursuit of establishing a global carbon market. more
