2007 European Renewable Energy Policy Conference
The first ever European Union Sustainable Energy Week started with the 2007 European Renewable Energy Policy Conference in Brussels from 29- 31 January 2007. The conference was hosted by the German Environment Ministry, the European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) and the European Commission. With more than 800 participants from politics, industry and academia from more than 40 countries the conference was a great success.
The conference gave a strong signal to member states to adopt at the spring summit on 8-9 March, together with the German presidency and the European Commission, an ambitious renewable energy expansion goal within the framework of the "energy policy for Europe" action plan.
It was clearly stated that the challenges of energy and climate policy should also be grasped as an opportunity for the European Union. Global market leadership in the area of renewable energy and environmental technologies provide an excellent opportunity for the EU to actively face international competition and to generate more economic growth and employment in Europe. Conference organisers announced a follow-up conference for the year 2009.
