Monitoring and evaluation of policy instruments to support renewable electricity in EU Member States
There are clear differences between the Member States of the European Union with regard to their success in promoting renewable energy sources in the electricity sector. These differences relate both to new construction of installed capacity and to the country-specific costs of supporting the expansion. This scientific analysis compares the effectiveness and economic efficiency of support policies in the countries of the EU. It also examines the cost reductions that can be achieved with an optimum national policy, a coordinated policy between individual Member States and harmonisation.
The aim of the European Union is to increase the renewables' share in the electricity sector to 21% by 2010 for the EU 25. This is the key constituent of Directive 2001/77/EC, which calls on Member States to use suitable instruments in order to achieve their specified national targets for renewable energies in the electricity sector.
