Way cleared for IRENA Centre of Innovation in Bonn
With its decisions on the 2010 work programme and budget, the third meeting of the Preparatory Commission for the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi has cleared the way for setting up the IRENA Secretariat in Abu Dhabi and the IRENA Centre of Innovation and Technology in Bonn. German cabinet has approved national biomass action plan
Following a proposal by the Federal Agricultural Minister Ilse Aigner and the Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel the cabinet has approved the National Biomass Action Plan (Energy) on 29.04.2009. With this plan the Federal Government is supporting the EU Commission which, in its Biomass Action Plan published in 2005, called upon the EU member states to draw up national action plans for the energy use of biomass. Renewables continue to grow
In 2008, renewable energy sources again made a significant contribution to climate protection: The most recent figures show that the production of electricity, heat and fuel from renewable energy sources led to a reduction of environmentally harmful carbon dioxide by approximately 112 million tonnes. Renewable energies once again proved their importance for growth and employment last year. According to the latest figures, the number of employees in this sector rose from 250,000 in 2007 to almost 280,000 - an increase of more than 10 percent. [
