Clean air management in Germany: Evaluation and implementation of legal requirements
Presentation delivered by MinDir Dr. Uwe Lahl
At this year’s transatlantic "Workshop on clean Air" in Brussels Dr. Uwe Lahl delivered a presentation on air quality management policies in Germany. He drew the conclusion that the clean air policies carried out in Germany and at European level have made it largely possible to comply with the European air quality standards for classic pollutants such as SO2. This does not apply to pollutants such as ozone, nitrogen dioxide or particulate matter.
Germany is in the process of setting up and implementing air quality management and action plans to achieve compliance with the targets set by the EU air quality management Directives. As an effective measure to reduce air pollution in particular in inner city areas, the management and action plans also provide for the possibility to establish environmental zones in which the circulation for vehicles with high emissions is banned.
