Response to Fukushima

On 11.03.2011 Japan was struck by a severe earthquake. The impact of this seismic event and the tsunami it triggered was also felt at nuclear power plant sites - specifically Fukushima I (Daiichi), Fukushima II (Daini), Onagawa and Tokai. At Japan's Fukushima I (Daiichi) nuclear power plant, it was the tsunami in particular that was to cause the worst reactor disaster since Chernobyl. The Federal Ministry for the Environment has since been closely involved in developments within Germany which have arisen in direct consequence.

An overview of the measures introduced to date:

GRS: Latest report on the situation in Fukushima (in German only)

BfS: Description and assessment of the sequence of events and causes (in German only)

For more information on both the situation in Fukushima and the technical background, please visit the websites of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) and the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) mbH.
