Solarpark in Brandenburg, Germany

The construction of the world’s largest solar power plant, Ouarzazate, was officially launched on May 10. The German government is contributing 115 million euros to this project. The BMU and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) are jointly helping Morocco to implement its solar plan and thus avoid an estimated 230,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.  more

Petersberg Climate Dialogue

From 5 to 7 May, 35 ministers from all regions of the world met in Berlin for the fourth Petersberg Climate Dialogue. Under the heading "Shaping the future" the high-ranking officualls discussed key issues in international climate policy. Initiated in 2010, the annual dialogue serves to support the UN climate negotiations to lend greater momentum to international climate action. more

Germany supports greater resource efficiency

Within one generation global raw materials' demand has doubled - from approx. 35 billion tonnes in 1980 to approx. 70 billion tonnes in 2010. "It must be our goal to use raw materials responsibly and to thus break the resource consumption spiral," outlined Federal Environment Minister Peter Altmaier on the occasion of the 12th Meeting of the International Resource Panel (IRP) in Berlin. more

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) is therefore supporting action in Grenada in the development and implementation of a comprehensive climate change adaptation strategy.  more

Peter Altmaier called for a close regional cooperation at a meeting with the heads of state and government of Baltic Sea countries. The objective of the conference was to strengthen public-private partnerships in order to stir investments for environmental protection measures. more

The Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) convened in Nairobi on 18-22 February, 2013 in a first ever universal session. Based on the Rio+20 decisions of June 2012, all UN members were for the first time entitled to vote. more

Altmaier met his Polish counterpart Marcin Korolec at the 16th German-Polish Environment Council on 6 March. Key topics discussed included climate policy, sustainable energy supply and the environmentally sound development of the border regions. more
