Around the world 1.3 billion people lack access toelectricity; 2.7 billion have no access to modern andhealthy forms of cooking. This has implications forhealth, for the environment and for the outlook forhuman development. The way out of poverty is inextricablylinked to having access to sustainable energy.
Meanwhile, greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuelsare contributing to global warming. A radical, globalmove towards sustainable energy and more energyefficiency must be part of the most important optionsfor countering climate change.
It is therefore only right and just that industrialisedcountries pursue energy and climate policies whichserve the goal of global sustainability.
