The mission of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz - BfS) is to ensure the safety and protection of humans and the environment from ionising and non-ionising radiation. With regard to ionising radiation the BfS deals with matters of x-ray diagnostics in the medical sector, the safe handling of radioactive substances in the nuclear technology sector and the protection against enhanced natural radiation. Tasks concerning non-ionising radiation include protection against ultraviolet radiation and the impact of mobile phones.
In addition to averting immediate hazards, key functions include preventive measures for the protection of the public, of employees at their workplace and patients in medical facilities.
